As you incorporate AI into your writing process, treat it like you would any other new member of your team. First, teach it the ropes. New-to-your-team writers always want to look at examples of the right way to write for your company. Experienced tech writers know that not all of your published content meets your own standards. Legacy content can frequently be a mash-up from a long history of unrelated features and tangled writing styles from cross-functional (if not dysfunctional) product teams that got tossed out into the village square to meet a deadline.
Such Frankensteins content monsters are enough to make any self-respecting villager take up her pitchfork and torch and start clambering up the hill to storm Castle Confusion. (Justifiable) protestations about unavailability of suitable body parts and faulty electrical connections are no defense. Here’s where AI can come to the rescue. Explain to AI specifically how your documentation falls short of the mark. Teach it the styles and standards that should be applied. Identify technical and product gaps and where to look for information to fill them. Iterate through a typical draft/review cycle with AI rewriting the docs and Subject Matter Experts and Technical Writers reviewing them until they are clear and correct. Then AI has examples to scale future rewrites for volume and velocity.
